Sam Okoth, AIIK, ACII, LL.M (Insurance Law)

Sam is an accomplished insurance and reinsurance executive with over 20 years of international experience across Africa, the United Kingdom, and global insurance markets. He has built a distinguished career in underwriting, reinsurance, delegated authority, regulatory affairs, corporate governance, and executive leadership.

Sam began his insurance career in Kenya in 1999 with Pan Africa Insurance before joining First Assurance and later Africa Merchant Assurance Company (AMACO) Limited, where he rose to the position of Senior Underwriter. During this period, he distinguished himself academically by completing the Associate qualification of the Chartered Insurance Institute (ACII), graduating among the top-performing candidates in Kenya. His achievement earned him an invitation by the Chartered Insurance Institute (CII), London, to attend the ACII Graduation Ceremony and Young Insurance Professionals Workshop in the United Kingdom.

In 2005, Sam joined the British Army, serving for eight years as an Infantry Officer. His military career developed his leadership, operational planning, governance, and decision-making capabilities while serving in demanding operational environments. He was honourably discharged in 2012 and was awarded the Iraq War Medal (Without Clasp) and Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee Medal in recognition of his distinguished service.

Following eight years of distinguished service in the British Army, Sam transitioned into the Lloyd’s of London market, where he held various roles with Lloyd’s Corporation, Pembroke Managing Agency, XL Catlin, Marsh & McLennan, Tokio Marine Kiln, Everest Group, and most recently as Chief Executive Officer and Principal Officer of Sey Re Underwriting Limited in Mauritius.

Throughout his career, Sam has successfully established and expanded reinsurance businesses, developed strategic partnerships with leading global insurers and reinsurers, negotiated complex treaty and facultative programmes, and advised organisations on governance, regulatory compliance, delegated underwriting, and business transformation. His expertise spans treaty and facultative reinsurance, specialty insurance, credit guarantee, surety, delegated authority, and strategic market expansion.

Sam holds a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Business Management (Finance) from the University of East London, a Master of Laws (LL.M) in Insurance Law from Queen Mary University of London, and is an Associate of both the Chartered Insurance Institute (ACII) and the Insurance Institute of Kenya (AIIK.
